What Is an RFI (Request for Information) in Construction?

An RFI is the formal question the contractor asks when the construction documents are unclear, contradictory, or missing information. It's the paper trail that clarifies design intent and protects everyone when problems emerge later. RFIs that don't get answered quickly become schedule delays; RFIs answered late become cost claims.
